Graphic Design: Art in the Orchard – Trail Map

They currently tend 90 varieties of perennial fruit in the form of raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, peaches, plums, cherries, pears and apples. Their apples are set up for Pick-Your-Own harvesting and they sell them at our farmstand here and at several farmer’s markets. Art In the Orchard is a walking sculpture trail which winds through our productive fruit gardens.  The self-guided trail is about a half-mile long.  A walk through the labyrinth adds about a quarter mile.  This year’s exhibition is the fourth biennial which features all new works by sculptors as selected by their credentialed jury.

Jon Steinman Book Tour: Grocery Story: The promise of food co-ops in the age of grocery giants

In-Store Meet the Author, 11am – 5pm
Talk & Book Signing, 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Presented by Jon Steinman and New Society Publishers

Jon Steinman will be making a stop at our Co-op as part of 100-city international book tour for Grocery Story: The promise of food co-ops in the age of grocery giants, published by New Society Publishers. A compelling case of the long and steady work of consumer-owned food co-ops and their relentless and remarkable work to remain relevant and impactful in their communities even in the age of modern chain grocery giants.

About the Author:

Jon Steinman has studied and worked with all things food for over two decades. He was the producer and host of the internationally syndicated radio show and podcast Deconstructing Dinner, once ranked as the most-listened-to food podcast in Canada. Jon is the writer and host of “Deconstructing Dinner: Reconstructing our Food System” – a television and web series currently streaming online. Jon coordinates and curates the annual Deconstructing Dinner Film Festival of compelling food documentaries and was an elected director from 2006-2016 of the Kootenay Co-op – Canada’s largest independent retail consumer food co-op, serving as Board President from 2014-2016. He lives in Nelson, BC.

WHY GROCERY STORY?

More than ever before, food co-ops are in need of differentiating themselves from chain and privately- owned retailers – many of whom carry products and services baring little distinction from what has commonly been considered “co-op food”. But where differentiation lies among food co-ops is in the diverse roles food co-ops play in their communities and through the democratizing of the economy that the cooperative model enables. The support food co-ops provide to local and regional foodmakers is also substantial, and Grocery Story devotes considerable attention to the promise of food co-ops to direct power in the marketplace back into the hands of foodmakers of all kinds – farmers, fishers, processors and manufacturers.
My intention with Grocery Story was to bring forward the co-op difference in the most penetrating, comprehensive, and inspiring way possible.

Graphic Design: Owner Drive

A cooperative is often founded and built on a membership/ownership basis in which owners are provided with incentives to continue to help support the business. As a result the business is an interesting blend of Organizational and Point of Sale systems in which it operates and markets itself. Part of their advertising practices involve an ownership drive which includes the incentives to join and promotional gifts. This year it was two produce bags, a tote bag, and wooden pencils.

My contribution was the poster and produce bags below:

Residency: Personal Wellness at Arenal Kioro

LA FORTUNA, CR – Arenal Kioro offers a fabulous place with a natural viewpoint to the Arenal Volcano which make a great retreat for Personal Wellness. The hotel has 27 acres of undulating land, surrounded by two streams (La Palma and Kioro) with crystalline waters that begin to flow in the Arenal Volcano National Park. Private Thermal water surround exuberant gardens for our guests´ pleasure.

The hotel hosts 53 suites, 11 with one king bed and a daybed and 42 with two Queen beds and a daybed, with two “Juliet” balconies with the best panoramic volcano and mountain view , hydromassage hot tub, air conditioning, safe deposit box, minibar, coffee maker, hot water, direct dialing telephone, cable television, hair dryer, key card, safety locks and wireless Internet.

With Costa Rica being a short 6 hour flight away from Boston, it makes a great getaway destination. Surrounded by lush greens and flora, the Arenal Volcano makes for a luxurious backdrop for a personal wellness weekend. Staying at a suite and spa resort promotes personal wellness; everything from scrumptious Costa Rican dishes to accessibility of the hot springs and an experience at Arenal Kioro gives you a sense of green luxury, promoting sustainability practices to help keep the area green and lush.

Arenal Kioro also offers tours and activities to give you a chance to explore the area. It is always convenient to work through a hotel to organize excursions in the area. I took advantage of the hanging bridges tour since that was something different than my last trip to Costa Rica that I hadn’t done. After the tour, I spent the afternoon sipping Pina coladas and mojitos and enjoyed the hot springs. Despite the rainy weather and season, I went into the experience embracing it as the locals would say – Pura Vida!

Published Photos: The Perpetual You – Choose a Day Alone

The daily routine requires the careful balance of being true to ourselves and meeting the expectations of others. What happens, then, when we are in a time of transition, growth, or monumental self-acceptance? We may need to take a step back and ask ourselves what we really want.

Spending a day near the ocean or another body of water makes for a lovely, resonant backdrop when we’re assessing our energy. The water reflects our purpose and symbolizes the ebb and flow of our lives. When called upon to do so, water rises higher. When no longer needed, water recedes from the sand.

Taking a day away—to yourself—without an agenda or demands on our time—allows us to renew (or set new) intentions, to reconnect with our core desires, and to reevaluate our motivations. If, upon reflection, our core desires have changed, we must be brave enough to change directions.
