The Secret of Sion – William Henry

I’ve been reading a few books lately. I’m still working on David Wilcock’s The Source Field Investigations but I recently had a burning desire to read William Henry‘s master piece, The Secret of Sion.

I bought the e-book version on my ipod touch for the kindle app. The paper back price was $85 dollars and the e-book version was $10! It was worth $10 too cause I found a lot of grammatical errors along with typos as well. I hope it was only the e-book version.

But I couldn’t put this book down. It is right on cue with what I’m into as an artist. Finally, we have a modern thinker whose got a good handle on what the purpose of religion is. His work is really convincing and makes a heck of a lot of sense. I don’t recommend the book for those who are more inclined to be skeptic, you have to acknowledge first that the artwork done back in the medieval/renaissance time periods were alchemical and not just for aesthetics. In ancient/medieval/renaissance art had a practical purpose and that was to convey information and knowledge that only the “pure hearted” a.k.a the “initiate” would be able to understand. I watched a documentary awhile ago about the science/religion of ancient Egypt called, “The Invisible Science” and it said that symbolism and mythology was the first veil to receiving knowledge to become enlightened.

I highly recommend this book, but definitely buy the e-book version.

A. Crowley, Sumeria and the Fallen Angels

A. Crowley, Sumeria and the Fallen Angels:

On April 8th, 9th and 10th of the year 1904, English Magus Aleister Crowley received a communication from a “praeterhuman” intelligence calling itself Aiwass or Aiwaz (pronounced eye-was). This being announced to Crowley that it was the minister of the Egyptian god Hoor-pa-Kraat, an aspect of the Egyptian sun god Horus. Aiwaz revealed that Crowley was to be the prophet of a new aeon or era for mankind: the Aeon of Horus. Aiwaz proceeded to dictate to Crowley three chapters of a book later to be called The Book of the Law. This book discloses the pattern of a coming age, a 2,000 year reign. A time of force, fire and blood. Of unparalleled freedoms and rampant chaos, a time not unlike our present age. The philosophy of this book came to be known as the Law of Thelema. Thelema is a Greek word meaning “will”, and the “True Will” is at the center of Crowley’s occult philosophy.

According to Crowley, this planet has already been through two previous ages of approximately 2,000 years each. His “reception” of the Book of the Law marked the dawning of the third aeon. The first of these two preceding ages was called the Aeon of the Egyptian Goddess Isis. The Aeon of Isis represented a matriarchal, earth-bond age. Isis’ era can be seen in the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. This was followed by the Aeon of Osiris , a patriarchal age that worshipped various gods in the form of the sun as a dying and resurrected deity. The beliefs of Christianity represent the culmination of this second age. Aiwaz “appeared” to Crowley in order to announce the birth of the new aeon, the offspring of Isis and Osiris, Horus. As explained by Crowley, the Aeon of Horus is an epoch in which the inhabitants of earth know that the sun does not die at night, pass through the Underworld only to be reborn at dawn. Instead it is seen as a great, fiery star that seemingly burns eternally as our individual spirits live eternally as well.

http://www.rosenoire.org/articles/fallen_angels.php

The Age of Horus was lain forth in The Book of the Law, it being the cornerstone of the philosophy of Aleister Crowley and it’s writing / creation was the event in his life which Crowley himself believed to be the most momentous occasion thereof, and one which he himself was merely the instrument in. The Book proclaimed the dawning of The New Aeon (or period of 2,000 year ruled over by an elemental deity), The Age of Horus and outlined the Law of Thelema, “Do What Thou Wilt Is The Whole Of The Law. Love Is The Law, Love Under Will”,

The Age of Horus marks the beginning of the New Aeo proclaimed by Aleister Crowley which dawned April of 1904 when the Book of the Law was transcribed. Its principle definition comes from the belief of the rulership of three gods whose influences have a determining force on the fate of the world throughout their reign over the Earth. First Isis whose reign was categorized as matriarchal, nurturing. Next was her husband Osiris whose influence was categorized as patriarchal, destructive and of turmoil, hence it was during this period of time in which the medieval dark ages took place. Next in line is Horus, the child of Isis and Osiris; this is the the The Age of Horus, the age we live in today. As Horus as ruler is but a child, the beginning of his reign (ie – the early Twentieth Century) is categorized as firstly chaotic, giving birth to new ways of thinking and it was this “childlike” idealism which gave birth to such radical early movements of this era such as fascism, communism, and crazes of all sorts which obsesses mankind. The principle of this being that throughout his age we will witness the child maturing and thus the stability of the world solidifying into more harmonious new ways of thought.

Remember that Crowley wrote the following description of the regime under Horus in 1904. He said:

“Everywhere his government is taking root. Observe for yourselves the decay of the sense of sin, the growth of innocence and irresponsibility, the strange modifications of the reproductive instinct with a tendency to become bi-sexual or epicene, the childlike confidence in progress combined with a nightmare fear of catastrophe, against which we are yet half unwilling to take precautions. Consider the outcrop of dictatorships, only possible when moral growth is in its earliest stages, and the prevalence of infantile cults like Communism, Fascism, Pacifism, health crazes, occultism in nearly all its forms, religions sentimentalized to a point of practical extinction. Consider the populatiry of the cinema, the wireless, the football pools and guessing competitions, all devices for soothing fractious infants, no seed of purpose in them. Consider sport, the babyish enthusiasms and rages which it excites, whole nations disturbed by disputes between boys. Consider war, the atrocities which occur daily and leave us unmoved and hardly worried. We are children.”

Symbols

The language of dreams is particularly remarkable; for the images of dreamers are not always known and easily understood appearances; they are often starting symbols whose meaning it is difficult to express in common words, and which the dreamer himself is seldom able to unriddle; on which account it was customary in ancient times, and particularly in the Temples, to have interpreters of dreams. From this arose the science of expounding dreams (oneirocritica, oneiroscopia). It is, however, the language of poets and prophets; that is the object and the image are one; and it seems that the primitive language and the language of God to man was symbolic. The language of dreams is the same in the most dissimilar men and nations; the prophet and the seer, the true poet, the magnetic clairvoyant, and the prophetic dreamer, more commonly use this language than that of common intercourse. In it lies such a fulness of meaning, and combination of times and objects, that the most comprehensive prose is unable to give its full expression. As common than at present, when the outward sense are more distracted with occupations of the mind, so do we find that symbols and hieroglyphics were more common; as among the Indian seers, the Israelitish prophets, the Greek oracles, and the old picture-writing of the Egyptians, and the votive tablets of the Temples. It is similarly connected with art. This was also symbolic in its architecture; for art is but the expression of the inner genius which inspires the soul of the artist, or the imagination of a people, and is intimately connected with religious feelings. The expression of art is, therefore, but the true language of the seer, and therefore mostly as symbolic in meaning; as for instance, the Ark of the Covenant, which arose by divine inspiration, and then expanded into the Temple of Solomon; till at length Christian architecture, in universal freedom and purity, as it were, cast off all the oppressive weight of earthy matter, and with its pointed arches, vaulted roofs, and towering spires, strives upwards towards heaven, as if to receive the glorious power descending from above.

Did you know Easter Eggs are Ancient Egyptian?

Happy Easter! I’m not doing much, I just slept in cause I won’t be getting much sleep from here until finals. It was nice. I woke up to find this article from the I’m into Egyptology page on facebook. Enjoy!

Source: http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/10483.aspx

Monday 25 April marks Sham El-Nasim, which Copts celebrate as part of Easter, but is one of the few days that Egyptians of all religions celebrate – since ancient times

Celebrated since 2700 BC by all Egyptians regardless of their religion, beliefs, and social status, the name Sham El-Nasim (Inhaling the breeze) is derived from the Coptic language that, in turn, is derived from the ancient Egyptian language. Originally pronounced Tshom Ni Sime, with tshom meaning “gardens” and ni sime meaning “meadows.”

Like most ancient Egyptian feasts, Sham El-Nasim was also affiliated with astronomy and nature. It marks the beginning of the spring festival, which is the time they believed day and night are equal, (when the sun is in the Aries zodiac) hence marking the beginning of creation. They confirm the exact date annually by sighting the sun in relation to the great pyramid. Ancient Egyptians named it The Feast of Shmo (the revival of life) and have officially celebrated it since 2700BC.

At the crack of dawn Egyptians usually leave their homes to have a picnic with their families in meadows and gardens to enjoy the breeze. On this national holiday the traditional Sham El-Nasim meal consists of fish, onions and eggs.

Fish was highly respected in ancient Egyptian beliefs. Salted mullet fish (known as fesikh), was offered to the gods in Esna in Upper Egypt to the extent that Esna’s ancient name was Lathpolis, which was the name of the original fish before it is salted.

As for colouring eggs, it’s a custom mentioned in the pharaoh’s famous Book of the Dead and in Akhenaton’s chants, “God is one, he created life from the inanimate and he created chicks from eggs.” Hence, the egg was a symbol of life to ancient Egyptians

Ancient Egyptians would boil eggs on Sham El-Nasim eve, decorate and colour them in various patterns, then write their wishes on these eggs, tuck them in baskets made of palm fronds and hang them on trees or the roof of their houses in hopes that the gods would answer their wishes by dawn.

The habit of eating onions on that day is equally ancient. According to Egyptian legends, one of the pharaoh’s daughters had an incurable disease. Doctors were clueless until a high priest started giving her a few drops of onion juice. Her condition improved and her father, thrilled, named that day “the onion coalition day.” That day people would roam the city of Menf and offer onions to their dead.

As for flowers and plants, ancient Egyptians considered them holy and the lotus flower was actually the symbol of the country in ancient times.

In ancient Egypt, families would combine all of these: they would gather on the eve of Sham El-Nasim to colour the boiled eggs, prepare the fesikh and onion, some hanging the onions on their door steps to ward off evil spirits and putting them under their grandchildren’s pillows that night to summon the god Sukar. Before dawn, people would head to meadows, gardens and the Nile river bank to watch the sunrise while carrying food and flowers. They spend their day out in the open air, joyfully singing away the hours.

Little has changed since the time of the Pharaohs, apparently.

Happy Sham El-Nasim!

George Washington’s Mysterious Encounter

“Looking up, I beheld standing opposite me a singularly beautiful female. So astonished was I, for I had given strict orders not to be disturbed that it was some moments before I found language to inquire the cause of her presence. A second, a third, and even a fourth time did I repeat my question, but received no answer from my mysterious visitor except a slight raising of her eyes. By this time I felt strange sensations spreading through me. I would have risen but the riveted gaze of the being before me rendered volition impossible. I assayed once more to address her, but my tongue itself had become paralyzed. A new influence, mysterious, potent, irresistible, took possession of me. All I could do was to gaze steadily, vacantly at my unknown visitant. Gradually the surrounding atmosphere seemed as though becoming filled with sensations, and grew luminous. Everything about me seemed to rarify, the mysterious vistor herself becoming more airy and yet more distinct to my sight than before. I now began to feel as one dying, or rather to experience the sensations which I have sometimes imagined accompany dissolution. I did not think, I did not reason, I did not move; All were alike impossible. I was only conscious of gazing fixedly, vacantly at my companion.

“Presently I heard a voice saying, ‘Son of the Republic, look and learn,’ while at the same time my visitor extended her arm eastwardly. I now beheld a heavy white vapor at some distance rising fold upon fold. This gradually dissipated, and I looked upon a strange scene. Before me lay spread out in one vast plain all the countries of the world–Europe, Asia, Africa and America. I saw rolling and tossing between Europe and America the billows of the Atlantic and between Asia and America lay the Pacific. ‘Son of the Republic,’ said the same mysterious voice as before, ‘look and learn,’ At that moment I beheld a dark, shadowy being, like an angel, standing, or rather floating in mid-air, between Europe and America. Dipping water out of the ocean in the hollow of each hand, he sprinkled some upon America with his right hand, While with his left hand he cast some on Europe. Immediately a cloud raised from these countries, and joined in mid-ocean. For a while it remained stationary, and then moved slowly westward, until it enveloped America in its murky folds. Sharp flashes of lightning gleamed through it at intervals, and I heard the smothered groans and cries of the American people. A second time the angel dipped water from the ocean, and sprinkled it out as before. The dark cloud was then drawn back to the ocean, in whose heaving billows it sank from view. A third time I heard the mysterious voice saying, ‘Son of the Republic, look and learn,’ I cast my eyes upon America and beheld villages and towns and cities springing up one after another until the whole land form the Atlantic to the Pacific was dotted with them. Again, I heard the mysterious voice say, ‘Son of the Republic, the end of the century cometh, look and learn.’

Holographic Reality and the World is Flat

In 1982 Alain Aspect and his team discovered that no matter how far two particles are apart, they always knew what the other was doing. David Bohm explains that this is because the particles aren’t sending communication signals back and forth but instead they are energetically connected. Being energetically connected would correlate to the fifth element known in ancient philosophies and “pagan” religions.

To understand why Bohm makes this startling assertion, one must first understand a little about holograms. A hologram is a three- dimensional photograph made with the aid of a laser.

To make a hologram, the object to be photographed is first bathed in the light of a laser beam. Then a second laser beam is bounced off the reflected light of the first and the resulting interference pattern (the area where the two laser beams commingle) is captured on film.

When the film is developed, it looks like a meaningless swirl of light and dark lines. But as soon as the developed film is illuminated by another laser beam, a three-dimensional image of the original object appears.

Qabbalah states that the Son of God, RA, or RAY, who is Jesus, the Light of the World. One night I had a bit of an epiphany and realized that Jesus may literally be the physical universe itself. The body of Christ, c(h)rystallized matter.

Genesis and Evolution of Solar System, Rosicrucian Cosmo-Conception;

To the Rosicrucians, as to any occult school, there is no such thing as empty or void space. To them space is Spirit in its attenuated form; while matter is crystallized space or Spirit. Spirit in manifestation is dual; that which we see as Form is the negative manifestation of Spirit – crystallized and inert. The positive pole of Spirit manifests as Life, galvanizing the negative Form into action, but both Life and Form originated in Spirit, Space, Chaos!

Since there needed to be film to create the physical world I wondered if there is any ancient references to something that describes film. It dawned on me that film is flat, and the ancients referred to the world as being flat. What if their perception of the world went way beyond the physical plane of reality, in a realm of perfection and transcendence?

Scientific American August 2003

…An astonishing theory called the holographic principle holds that the universe is like a hologram: just as a trick of light allows a fully three-dimensional image to be recorded on a flat piece of film, our seemingly three-dimensional universe could be completely equivalent to alternative quantum fields and physical laws “painted” on a distant, vast surface.

After mulling over my mythology notes I came upon Tibetan buddhism and Mount Meru;

In the mythology of Tibetan Buddhism, Mount Meru is a place which simultaneously represents the center of the universe and the single-pointedness of mind sought by adepts. Thousands of miles in height, Meru is located somewhere beyond the physical plane of reality, in a realm of perfection and transcendence. Symbolic representations of Mount Meru are commonly found in Tibetan mandalas, contemplative diagrams designed to aid meditators in focusing.

I wondered if a Mt. Meru was an archetype for simply how the light was projected.

Artistic perspective drawing

I was immediately blown away by the similarities between the Tibetan mandala (second image) and the holographic project below:

Here is another Mt. Meru mandala. Take a look at that summit projecting!!

Ancient Egyptian Wormholes.

We are aware that the ancient Egyptians were highly advanced, but were they advanced enough to have wormhole technology? Have we been looking at their art and misunderstood their entire “religious” beliefs and otherworldly origins? In Mali, Africa there is a supposedly primitive tribe called the Dogon tribe, but researchers have been able to decipher the Dogon glyphs and myths to find that their cosmological system conveys scientific meaning through a complex system of mythological themes, symbols, storylines, and words. It appears that many other cultures used similar mythological themes, symbols, storylines, and words. Perhaps the ancient Egyptian culture was no different. In their legends, the ancient egyptians speak of traveling in boats.

One legend states that each day, Ra was born and began a journey across the sky. Ra was believed to travel in the Manjet-boat. or the ‘Barque of Millions of Years’. He was joined on this daily journey by a crew of many gods . The Manjet-boat would sail through the twelve provinces, representing the twelve hours of daylight. At the end of each day Ra was thought to die and embarked on his night voyage. For this journey he was called Auf, which means ‘corpse’. Ra sailed in a boat called the Mesektet-boat or night-barque on his journey through the twelve hours of darkness.

These boats were also called “Boats of Eternity”.

Pyramid on Mars

Mainstream archeologists say that the Egyptian pyramids were tombs. But contrary to that belief the Order of the Rosae Croix, a mystery school that was created by the Pharaohs of Egypt state that the Pyramids were created by Thought, or the Egyptian God Thoth. Thought is the Egyptian god THOTH, the creator of almost every activity known to man. Thought is spelled T H O T H. This god is responsible for the alphabet, writing, speaking, the sciences, religion, … you name it, and Thoth is responsible for it. Thoth’s priests claimed Thoth was the Demi-Urge who created everything from sound. According to the Freemasons the Pyramids were tools of creation. What if we propose that the pyramids were responsible for the galaxy?

Research has been done investigating that the Egyptian pyramids were some kind of power plant…. thus illustrated as above. Though what came to mind about the angle of the beam was the angle of a beam coming out of a black hole:

Makeup – Ancient Makeup?

I’m a HUGE fan of makeup and its a big inspiration for me. I love playing with color and makeup is a way for me to do that. Mixing and matching shades I normally wouldn’t wear into a wearable look. Makeup can be extremely artistic when done right.

Did you know makeup is extremely ancient too? The idea of the black eyeliner came from the ancient Egyptians.

Aton, the Sun and the Holy Spirit – Sun Symbolism

Warning: Long.

Source: http://www.williamhenry.net/art_sun.html

2010’s most important celestial story may have been about another celestial disk, our Sun, waking up. To paraphrase astrophysicist Dr. Paul LaViolette, ‘Earth is under fire’ from our restless Sol. This is big news.

Scientists warn that from 2011 till mid 2013 we will see more and potentially destructive stellar activity as the Sun enters the most active part of its cycle known as “solar max.” Noting that this activity coincides with the end of the Mayan calendar, prophets warn this period will see dramatic signs in the sky (coinciding with even more tyrannical governance in the name of fighting terrorism, even louder high-pitched ringing in our ears, more body ache from scaling the new frequency or tone as we morph into a new species and, generally, more cosmic wonderment or weirdness).

Could the Sun’s awakening and light show be a ‘just in time’ cosmic anointing in tides of light and the prelude to fulfillment of Mayan and Christian End Time prophecy?

It’s beginning to look that way.

Here’s what’s happening.

A full-disk multi wavelength extreme ultraviolet image of the sun taken by SDO on March 30, 2010. (Credit: NASA/Goddard/SDO AIA Team)

Increased solar activity could give residents of the continental U.S., southern Europe and Japan the chance to see the northern lights for the first time in several years

‘SUN, SON, SUN, HERE IT COMES…’

After an unusually long period of low activity, a series of powerful solar events took place on August 1, 2010, where nearly the entire Earth-facing side of the Sun erupted in a tumult of activity, with a large solar flare, a solar tsunami, multiple filaments of magnetism lifting off the solar surface, radio bursts, and half a dozen coronal mass ejections (CMEs).

SUN STORMS: NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory snapped this multi-wavelength extreme ultraviolet image of the sun, showing the Aug. 1, 2010, solar eruption that blasted charged particles toward Earth. The Class C3 solar flare triggered stunning aurora displays and geomagnetic storms on Earth that lasted about 12 hours. (Photo: NASA)

As the Sun awakens, NASA is keeping a close eye on space weather (and wondering what’s going on in our solar system and, indeed, the galaxy?!!!). Some are warning of potentially catastrophic events to come between now and mid-May 2012-2013. Others say they’ve been hearing this solar “kill shot” BS for years and nothing’s happened.

Richard Fisher, head of NASA’s Heliophysics Division, explains what it’s all about: “The Sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity. At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms.” The intersection of these two issues is foremost on the minds of space scientists.

The National Academy of Sciences framed the problem two years ago in a landmark understatement entitled “Severe Space Weather Events—Societal and Economic Impacts.”

It noted how people of the 21st-century rely on high-tech systems for the basics of daily life. Smart power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and emergency radio communications can all be temporarily knocked out (or even wiped out) by intense solar activity. In other words, basically everything upon which our lives now depend is at risk in the coming years.

A century-class solar storm, the Academy warned, could cause twenty times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina. That would be a two trillion dollar disaster!

Much of the damage can be mitigated if managers know a storm is coming. Putting satellites in ‘safe mode’ and disconnecting transformers can protect these assets from damaging electrical surges. Preventative action, however, requires accurate forecasting – a job that has been assigned to NOAA.

ATON ATONATIUH

Several prophetic traditions, including the Inca, foretell of immense changes during our time. As Kathy Doore observes, the Inca prophecies say that now, in this age, when the eagle of the North and the condor of the South fly together, the Earth will awaken. The eagles of the North cannot be free without the condors of the South.

The Aztecs also paid very close attention to the movement of the Sun and their calendar is second only to the Mayan in accuracy. For Aztecs, Tonitiuh was the god of sun and Tollan, the Aztec heaven. Interestingly, the original Mayan name homeland was called Tollan or Tula and it was from Tula where Quetzalcoatl ruled. Mayan prophecy says he’s expected to return in 2012.

The Aztec Calendar and the Sun. At the center of the Aztecs’ calendar stone is the sun god, Tonatiuh. He is surrounded 20 day symbols. Tonatiuh’s Face is the face of the sun, Lord of Heaven, around which takes place all daily and periodic phenomena

The face of Tonatiuh is in the center circle of the solar stone. Around the face are four squares called Nahui- Ollin, or Four Movement. According to Aztec legend, these squares represented the different ways that the four previous suns (or worlds) had come to an end: first by wild animals, then by wind, by fire, and by floods. The Aztecs believed they were living in the fifth and last world

I am fascinated by the similarity between the names and meaning of the names Tonatiuh (tona = to the sun and heat, tiuh = ir) and Aton, the name of the Disk during the reign of Akhenaton. This revolutionary thinker asserted that the Aton, “the Heat or Energy within the Disk” – also interpreted as the light that illuminates the Sun — transcended and comprehended all other images of Divinity.

A disk with rays extending from it symbolized the Aton. The rays culminate in delicate hands that offer the “ankh” or key of life symbol. No other image was allowed in the temples. It reminded worshippers that the Essence of the Sun – the “heat” or the “heat and light” within the Disk – is not confined to the Disk itself, but is present and active, and life giving wherever the rays of the Sun reach. In the Hymn to Aton, Akhenaton wrote that these rays even penetrate deep within the sea.

Akhenaton, Nefertiti and family are anointed by the rays of the Aton

The Aton disk with downward beams ending in hands

Pentecost by Duccio di Buoniseqna. The eternal force of the Aton reappears in the Christian concept of Pentecost. While the disciples of Jesus were indoors praying, a sound like that of a rushing wind filled the house and tongues of fire descended and rested over each of their crown chakras. The Holy Spirit manifests as flames atop the disciples heads. Pentecost marks the birth of the Christian church

“Suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:2-3)

As I discuss in SOUL RISING, Christian art portraying the Pentecost, or the anointing of the disciples by the Son in that cosmic energy called the Holy Spirit, is virtually identical to the Amarna depictions of Akhenaton and Nefertiti receiving the rays/keys of the Aton.

In these depictions it is possible to see the connection between the Key of Life and the Holy Spirit. So clear is the correspondence that one wonders if the Pentecost is a revival of an ancient Gnostic ceremony or mystery school teaching?

The disciples experienced the Radiant Energy of the Sun in the Upper Room at Pentecost

Mary receives the mystical rays of the Holy Spirit from a brilliant light at Pentecost (L). Akhenaton and Nefertiti bask in the rays/keys of the Aton (r)

Jesus/Lord/Sun/Son beams Aton-like rays of light to the disciples at Pentecost

Qabbalah states that the Son of God, RA, or RAY, who is Jesus, the Light of the World.

If we substitute the Sun for the Son as the transmitter of this energy we can imagine a vibration coming from our star and illuminating the consciousness of the disciples, energizing and empowering them. Christian prophecy says it will be poured out on all flesh in the Last Days (Acts 2:16-21).

The Earth Without the Moon

Source: The Earth Without the Moon

The period when the Earth was Moonless is probably the most remote recollection of mankind. Democritus and Anaxagoras taught that there was a time when the Earth was without the Moon.(1) Aristotle wrote that Arcadia in Greece, before being inhabited by the Hellenes, had a population of Pelasgians, and that these aborigines occupied the land already before there was a moon in the sky above the Earth; for this reason they were called Proselenes.(2)

Apollonius of Rhodes mentioned the time “when not all the orbs were yet in the heavens, before the Danai and Deukalion races came into existence, and only the Arcadians lived, of whom it is said that they dwelt on mountains and fed on acorns, before there was a moon.” (3)

Plutarch wrote in The Roman Questions: “There were Arcadians of Evander’s following, the so-called pre-Lunar people.”(4) Similarly wrote Ovid: “The Arcadians are said to have possessed their land before the birth of Jove, and the folk is older than the Moon.” (5) Hippolytus refers to a legend that “Arcadia brought forth Pelasgus, of greater antiquity than the moon.”(6) Lucian in his Astrology says that “the Arcadians affirm in their folly that they are older than the moon.”(7)

Censorinus also alludes to the time in the past when there was no moon in the sky.(8)

Some allusions to the time before there was a Moon may be found also in the Scriptures. In Job 25:5 the grandeur of the Lord who “Makes peace in the heights” is praised and the time is mentioned “before [there was] a moon and it did not shine.” Also in Psalm 72:5 it is said: “Thou wast feared since [the time of] the sun and before [the time of] the moon, a generation of generations.” A “generation of generations” means a very long time. Of course, it is of no use to counter this psalm with the myth of the first chapter of Genesis, a tale brought down from exotic and later sources.

The memory of a world without a moon lives in oral tradition among the Indians. The Indians of the Bogota highlands in the eastern Cordilleras of Colombia relate some of their tribal reminiscences to the time before there was a moon. “In the earliest times, when the moon was not yet in the heavens,” say the tribesmen of Chibchas.(9)

There are currently three theories of the origin of the moon:

1) The Moon originated at the same time as the Earth, being formed substantially from the same material, aggregating and solidifying.

2) The Moon was formed not in the vicinity of the Earth, but in a different part of the solar system, and was later captured by the Earth.

3) The Moon was originally a portion of the terrestrial crust and was torn out, leaving behind the bed of the Pacific.

All three theories claim the presence of the Moon on an orbit around the Earth for billions of years. Mythology may supply each of these views with some support (Genesis I for the first view; the birth of Aphrodite from the sea for the third view; Aphrodite’s origin in the disruption of Uranus, and also the violence of Sin—the Babylonian Moon—seems to support the second view).

Since mankind on both sides of the Atlantic preserved the memory of a time when the Earth was without the Moon, the first hypothesis, namely, of the Moon originating simultaneously with the Earth and in its vicinity, is to be excluded, leaving the other two hypotheses to compete between themselves.

We have seen that the traditions of diverse peoples offer corroborative testimony to the effect that in a very early age, but still in the memory of mankind, no moon accompanied the Earth.(10) Since human beings already peopled the Earth, it is improbable that the Moon sprang from it: there must have existed a solid lithosphere, not a liquid earth. Thus while I do not claim to know the origin of the Moon, I find it more probable that the Moon was captured by the Earth. Such an event would have occurred as a catastrophe.(11) If the Moon’s formation took place away from the Earth,(12) its composition may be quite different.

There is no evidence to suggest whether the Moon was a planet, a satellite of another planet, or a comet at the time of its capture by the Earth. Whatever atmosphere it may have had(13) was pulled away by the Earth, by other contacting bodies, or dissipated in some other way.

Since the time the Moon began to accompany the Earth, it underwent the influence of contacts with comets and planets that passed near the Earth in subsequent ages. The mass of the Moon being less than that of the Earth, the Moon must have suffered greater disturbances in cosmic contacts. During these contacts the Moon was not carried away: this is due to the fact that no body more powerful than the Earth came sufficiently close to the Moon to take it away from the Earth for good; but in the contacts that took place the Moon was removed repeatedly from one orbit to another.

The variations in the position of the Moon can be read in the variations in the length of the month. The length of the month repeatedly changed in subseqent catastrophic events—and for this there exists a large amount of supporting evidence. In these later occurrences the Moon played a passive role, and Zeus in the Iliad advised it (Aphrodite) to stay out of the battle in which Athene and Ares (Venus and Mars) were the main contestants.

[Cf. H. Alfven and G. Arrhenius, “Two Alternatives for the History of the Moon,” Science 165 (1969), 11ff.; S. F. Singer and L. W. Banderman, “Where was the Moon Formed?” Science 170 (1970), 438-439: “ . . . The moon was formed independently of the earth and later captured, presumably by a three-body interaction, and these events were followed by the dissipation of the excess energy through tidal friction in a close encounter.” More recently, a study of lunar paleotides has shown that “the Moon could not have been formed in orbit around the Earth” (A. J. Anderson, “Lunar Paleotides and the Origin of the Earth-Moon System,” The Moon and the Planets, 19 [1978], 409-417). Because of a certain degree of instability in the Sun-Earth-Moon system, “the planetary origin and capture of the Moon by the Earth becomes a strong dynamic possibility.” (V. Szebehely and R. McKenzie, “Stability of the Sun-Earth-Moon System,” The Astronomical Journal 82 (1977), 303ff.].
