Wellfleet, MA Artist Talk: Janet Echelman

Wednesday afternoon, I drove down to my family’s summer home in Eastham to attend an artist talk in Wellfleet later that evening. The artist – Janet Echelman, who I have admired since junior year of college when I wrote a paper about her work comparing it to a 1960s artist. Ever since then, her work has amazed me. When I came down to the reception for Truro – in July, I picked up a Provincetown Art Gallery guide and saw in the back a list of events and saw that Janet Echelman was speaking in Wellfleet. I am very glad I got to attend her talk as she spoke more about her process and journey as an artist. It was refreshing to hear her background as she thought she’d never break into the art world as a traditional artist and it got me thinking about my work and journey. It also impressed me how each design of hers, while the final outcome is the same style and technique and design she has fabricated, the original concept and research is different each time and tailored to each commission/city.

New Client: Style for Bliss

I recently had the opportunity to present my portfolio and proposal for a social-enterprise brand based in Marlborough, MA. They are part of the UN and help train women with marketable skills in jewelry design to change their lives. Our proposal was to conceptualize a package design concept for their jewelry brand – Style for Bliss. When I got the invitation to present my portfolio, I was stoked as their work is right up K Glyphics’ alley. I spent a few minutes researching jewelry packaging and drove quickly down to Michael’s to purchase some packaging supplies to put together a few prototypes – and it definitely paid off!

The creative director of Style for Bliss and I spoke for 2 hours about their work, my work and the proposal. The over all the presentation went way better than I anticipated as that is always a good thing. As the CD and I got talking and sharing our ideas she ended up really liking my portfolio and proposal and said I was her favorite :).

I am happy to announce that my proposal was accepted for their Packaging Designer position! My role will be to develop and design a package for their jewelry that communicates their brand through design and materials. I am excited to take on this endeavor as it is something entirely new to my skill set and for K Glyphics. But there is a lot of growth and opportunities from this.

Sigh…

So the two major orders that came through ended up to be scammers. Thanks to my former boss who was willing to help process one but I ended up not needing to. I also allowed myself to ask for clarity on where I stood with him and he cut ties with me.

Very sad day. Necessary, but it was for the best. I will always look back on my connection with him with fondness even if he doesn’t want me as a friend.

Time to heal.

Can’t Sleep

Can’t sleep tonight! I’ve been anxious with a few business projects lately. The shanty has come to a close and I made almost $600! Pretty good for a first time… I’ve had roughly 5 transactions a day and learned a lot about my future customers and my work in general. One of the other artists gave me an idea to try that I might explore in August. This month has been crazy wrapping up the shanty and getting ready for my three shows. This week/weekend I am preparing for the Boston Public Library show and next week I will be dropping off my work in Truro for another show and this weekend is the reception at the exhibit in Gloucester which started on the 2nd. In the middle of all this I had two large orders come through that I can’t say much about – yet – as I’m still in the process of sealing them. One is close to being closed and the other I am waiting on the contract for.
