2017 Wrap Up

Every year I like to do a yearly wrap-up of everything I’ve accomplished or did. And in the new year, do a post on my new goals and dreams for the year.

January

I connected with American Craftsman Galleries, and while they are an official client of mine, the work promised hadn’t really gone anywhere.

February

I signed onto Oranum, a living streaming website for psychic readings. This venture turned out to be more time consuming that it is worth. But I actually do miss doing this, and plan to get back into it eventually once my apartment is setup.

March

I connected with clients Alcon Lighting and About Africa. The later one turned out to be much more work than I could handle and it started at the time that I have my current job. I also established a business relationship with a local printer, which has made my printing services a lot easier to manage.  I had an interview in Montague, MA which ended up falling through but could explore western Mass a bit more.

April

I was hired at River Valley Co-op and I traveled to Putney, VT for a photoshoot.

May

I had no posts documented for May, but I moved to Amherst temporarily before finding my own place.

June

I joined the PVMA – Pioneer Valley Mycological Association and went on several walks. Which included West Chesterfield and Northampton. I also started to go to Brattleboro, VT for darkroom services and made a new set of kirlian images for the first time since Italy. I worked on a food photoshoot for a small Maple Farm in Worthington, MA that was for a cookbook.

July

I drove to Goshen, CT for the New England Balloon Festival to meet up with my New England GLT friends. PVMA had a microscopy workshop.

August

I scheduled a solo show at Northampton City Hall. I also scheduled my first PR trip to Mount Tremper, NY. I bought a microscope and started experimenting with it and taking microscopy images. I went to New Paltz, NY and had my first aura photograph taken. I signed on two clients, Bowflex Barbie Fitness and Kathmandu Infosys.

September

I went on my first PR trip to Mount Tremper, NY and to Emerson Resort and Spa. I was accepted into the Quantive Fluorescent Microscopy intensive course at MDI Biological laboratory for next May. I also ended my longest-standing client relationship of 2.5 years. I attempted to have a fundraiser for the work I’m doing for the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.

October

I scheduled a PR trip to Switzerland for July of 2018 and traveled to London, England for a week.

November

I had the exhibition for SPE Northeast Conference Group Exhibition and a staff exhibition at River Valley Co-op.

December

So far, I have no posts for December. I have my travel scheduled from January to August of next year and I am excited for what next year brings.

Kenaz – light of life

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

While doing my asparagus series, I used the same technique of arranging the objects in my “Olivio” piece that was inspired by fortune telling and the infiorata art form. I had chosen the below image to be included in my portfolio and was unsure of if it reflected the coherence of the portfolio since right away I didn’t see anything meaningful.

While meditating recently on an issue, I began to feel drawn once again to my runes. I had uncovered them in my plethora of boxes from my move and started to use them again. Using runes is a lot like using the ‘stick and bones’ method of divination (throwing them on the ground and picking up ones that you feel drawn to and/or form some sort of significance).

It totally dawned on me that the unintentional arrangement of the asparagus in the image is a reverse image of the rune; Kenaz.  It is a German word for ‘kien’ which literally translates to pine or fir tree. In old English the meaning refers to a torch made from a pine tree. Other linguistic ties to this word brings the meaning of the rune to more light. The Scottish term “ken” means to know something. Furthermore the German root “kan” means to generate something. Kenaz has a connection with knowledge, illumination, as well as fire and heat.

With the above meaning, Kenaz therefore means flame, a spark of light or illumination and reversed it means a dwindling flame or spark of light, to not give up on a dream, a source of inspiration is petering out, a sense of giving up. This piece was created back in June, just after starting a new job, a new chapter in a my life and at the time was thinking of certain situations in my life. It’s funny that now almost 6 months later it’s meaning has surfaced at a pertinent time where the meaning makes sense.

September Recap

Last Thursday I held a first ever fundraiser event for the collaborative project I have established with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the North American Orchid Conservation Center. It was a first ever for me, but not first ever event. Unfortunately, we did not get as many people as we expected, nor raised as much as we expected. However, the event was had, the project was launched and a building block was built.

September was also a very challenging time for me, personally. SO much went wrong, that it actually blew my mind. For the first time in my project history things just did not pan out. No matter how much work I put into these projects and events, it either just altogether not end up happening or it was half-assed and the available resources in putting together these projects and events failed. I lost a lot of money and emotional energy, and for the month of August I was excited for this month to be my way of breaking into the community here; establishing connections, resources, and building a new community and strengthening the one I have already built. Well none of the above really happened. I pushed forward to prove the people in my circles that I could pull off the above yet the surrounding community didn’t pull through and it still failed.

At the beginning of the month, I had my first solo exhibition in Northampton and the Hampshire County. I was pretty excited that it came together so quickly. Had scheduled the dates for installation and reception times. Ordered the printed materials, only to be met with a last minute change in the duration of the exhibition as well as setup. Lost money in the printed materials as well as taking time off from work to install. I ended up setting up the following week, with the reception the following day. I had done postcards, online promotion, flyer distribution for the opening reception and City Hall failed to open the building on reception day so the 30-60 people I was expecting both of which of personal and non-personal contacts didn’t show, only one of my good friends came because she and her partner were already in the area and I had to let her into City Hall!

Fast forward to the following weekend. I had spent the last 3.5 years building a following in the travel and lifestyle categories and a social media reach to be able to work with hotel and resorts to promote travel, their destinations and residencies. I had connected with a photographer on Model Mayhem in Mount Tremper, NY area where I was scheduled to stay at Emerson Resort and Spa. Doing complimentary stays and media trips are a huge reward for hard work in building a blog and following. However, the photographer did not pull his weight and deliver the photos. He put a huge ass watermark and left the images unusable for digital and print publication regardless of explaining to him explicitly in email and in person over lunch the reasoning to not have watermarks in a collaboration. He took the entire project and made it about himself, used my comped room as a set for his following and acted like he had a lot of reactivity to his posts while on location when he didn’t. While in a Facebook live, he said “my room” when it was actually mine, and he wasn’t staying at the resort. People wonder why I have to or am used to doing everything myself, and this is why. As a freelancer/individual, sometimes I can’t trust anyone to carry through a vision.

I think it will take me some time to recover from this month and reassess what I did get out of the above, and how to milk the above to create a transmutation into something positive. While I do have a fear of failure, I do not believe in failure as there are many outcomes and possibilities in this universe. The mind just has to be open enough to attract it.

Inquiry: World’s Largest Kaleidoscope

Mount Tremper, NY | World’s Largest Kaleidoscope – While staying at the Emerson Resort and Spa one of their biggest features is a silo that has been converted into a kaleidoscope show. The show is an interactive display of light, sound and form and tells the story of the universe through this. The display was created by a local film firm in NYC and by two artists. After the show, you find yourself in a gift shop fill of different kaleidoscopes ranging from all sizes and prices. The team at Emerson gifted me a travel-sized kaleidoscope that I now keep on my kitchen table. Not only is it a feast for the eyes, but this experience has inspired me a bit in my own photography.

The above image was taken through a triangle tubular piece and had a mandala panting on the back wall. This image is pretty cool and makes me wonder if I can recreate the effect by creating a kaleidoscope lens. Throughout the shop there were interactive displays where you can look through kaleidoscopes and spin a bowl of marbles to create your own visuals. This activity is complimentary for guests.

Mount Tremper, NY – PR Trip

I’m super excited to announce my first PR trip with Emerson Resorts and Spa. I will be arriving in the Hudson Valley on Sunday September 17th and staying the night, to leave early Monday morning to get back to Northampton for work.  While I was just there, this is an entirely different kind of trip. I can’t say much about the trip at the moment. This is kind of a pivotal moment for me as it’s something I’ve been wanting to do more of and just now have been able to get a grasp of how this industry works in conjunction with my personal interests and aspirations!

New Clients: Bowflex Barbie Fitness and Kathmandu Infosys

Happy to welcome Bowflex Barbie and Kathmandu Infosys into my ‘client family’. These past few weeks have been extremely busy with moving among other things. Transitioning from one way of life to another has been quite difficult, more or less than anticipated. It’s weird to think that something you’ve wanted for so long can be a huge adjustment. Anyway, just taking one day at a time, week, month, etc and slowly settling in. 🙂

A new beginning….

My client work has helped with the transition not only with the finances but with focusing, allowing myself to take a break from moving and day-to-day activities to focus on things I simply enjoy doing. My freelance projects have been there when things got scary, OK and now when things are transitioning. I know there will be a time when they won’t be… but for now they are the one thing that can’t be taken away from me…

In this day and age of graphic design being a competitive field, gaining clients regardless of the competition, is extremely satisfying, especially going after clients whom you’ve made proposals for or connected through other means and those means ending but still wanting to work with you regardless. Building something up from the ground is not easy, and can be hard to let go.

Loyalty

Client loyalty is also huge, in addition to two new clients, a previous client had come around again after a long hiatus asking if I still want to be on the team. Building business relationships isn’t just about the money, work or what have you but about the relationships and community that come from it. This particular client had been reworking things on their end as well and it would’ve been a shame to just say ‘no’ just because of things falling through. Life happens, and I wish more people would better understand that. To build a independent freelance business, one must focus on client loyalty, do good work and maintain lasting relationships through a collaborative, creative process. Otherwise it may just fail or you’ll be struggling and going from one project to another without much longevity. To sustain any business is to focus on longevity, to take your day-to-day activities and energy and think about what will this do to make my business last?

Give a shoutout to Bowflex Barbie Fitness —> https://www.facebook.com/bowflexbarbiefitness/

And Kathmandu Infosys —> https://www.facebook.com/kiecpage/

And continue to follow along for updates on these projects and their whereabouts 🙂

Also a thank you to Copy Cat Printing for their negotiations in working towards making these projects a success 🙂

Photography: Photo Projects Wrap Up

New Electrography Images

Sometime back in May after starting my new job, I went to the Vermont Center for Photography to expose a new round of electrographic images. The last time I think I did this was Italy I believe. I can’t believe it really had been two years since I created new images. Time flies when yer hustlin’…

I haven’t decided if any of the above are portfolio worthy. I have many plans to return after my life has settled and regained some stability. A colleague of mine suggested I do some sort of oracle deck regarding plants and flowers and was trying to figure out the best divination method for this. While talking to someone since moving here, I have realized a method to do this functionally however it will require a lot of trial and error. It came about after being inspired by how Italian artists decorate the streets for the Bishop’s arrival on easter and how one of my pieces resembled fish jumping out of the water. This symbology sparked an idea of how I could go about making an oracle deck and going back to ancient times and how psychics and seers would through bones and sticks to tell a fortune. The image would be the fortune and whatever is seen in the image would be what would be predicted. Kind of like a tea leaf reading as well.

I also have begun a traditional photo project that I started in my traditional photo class in college that required spinning objects on a lazy Susan and capturing the light streaks swirling around the object. I have been thinking a lot lately about my mission and how to go about visualizing it. One of the hardest parts about working with art and science is that you have to visualize scientific ideas, and my mission came to me through a psychic experience – while completely understanding that this experience is what I saw and made available to me not necessarily everyone around me is going to see the same, nor saw the same experience. Seeing the world through its’ depths isn’t exactly easy as we’re trained to see what our eyes see.

My Sweet Life

This past Sunday I began a project shooting photography with a woman who owns a very small Maple Farm in Worthington, MA. We seem to get along well and started the project off well. I go back again next Sunday to continue this work.

So a lot of project stuff has been going on especially photography related projects. If you follow me on Instagram you might catch a post on some graphic design projects that I’ve been doing at RVC. However, I’ve mostly been keeping graphic design work at RVC and have kept most of my freelance clients at bay… once my life settles down, I really want to start blogging more frequently. So much to explore, and do around here. I have to think about what would make great content. 🙂

Activities: Mushroom Walk

Last Sunday, I went on my second mushroom walk. Unfortunately, it was cut short due to unexpected rain. A member of our group did find black American truffles, though. Next walk won’t be until Sunday, July 16th.
