New Client: Style for Bliss

I recently had the opportunity to present my portfolio and proposal for a social-enterprise brand based in Marlborough, MA. They are part of the UN and help train women with marketable skills in jewelry design to change their lives. Our proposal was to conceptualize a package design concept for their jewelry brand – Style for Bliss. When I got the invitation to present my portfolio, I was stoked as their work is right up K Glyphics’ alley. I spent a few minutes researching jewelry packaging and drove quickly down to Michael’s to purchase some packaging supplies to put together a few prototypes – and it definitely paid off!

The creative director of Style for Bliss and I spoke for 2 hours about their work, my work and the proposal. The over all the presentation went way better than I anticipated as that is always a good thing. As the CD and I got talking and sharing our ideas she ended up really liking my portfolio and proposal and said I was her favorite :).

I am happy to announce that my proposal was accepted for their Packaging Designer position! My role will be to develop and design a package for their jewelry that communicates their brand through design and materials. I am excited to take on this endeavor as it is something entirely new to my skill set and for K Glyphics. But there is a lot of growth and opportunities from this.

Can’t Sleep

Can’t sleep tonight! I’ve been anxious with a few business projects lately. The shanty has come to a close and I made almost $600! Pretty good for a first time… I’ve had roughly 5 transactions a day and learned a lot about my future customers and my work in general. One of the other artists gave me an idea to try that I might explore in August. This month has been crazy wrapping up the shanty and getting ready for my three shows. This week/weekend I am preparing for the Boston Public Library show and next week I will be dropping off my work in Truro for another show and this weekend is the reception at the exhibit in Gloucester which started on the 2nd. In the middle of all this I had two large orders come through that I can’t say much about – yet – as I’m still in the process of sealing them. One is close to being closed and the other I am waiting on the contract for.

Hyarts, MA – Hyarts Shanty Week!

People are buying! I’m so excited. Tuesday and Wednesday have been the best days. I think Thursday is going to be a harder day to sell, so far it’s been pretty slow. I’m hoping this weekend will make up for it. There’s been a lot of interest and I’ve been handing out my rack cards and have gotten a few online orders. One person asked for my online shop. So that’s great. One person was really interested in buying Pine Needles #2 and he may come back later. He happened to work in Wellesley! I’m happy with how this week is going so far. Trying different things with my products and see where it goes. It’s just lovely sitting here by the water on the harbor. πŸ™‚ And I get internet access! So I can get caught up on all my marketing and internet work. πŸ™‚

Product Photoshoot

Today I went to Lincoln Woods Park in Rhode Island and did a photoshoot with a lovely model named Morgan. The shoot really came together and I LOVE how the photos came out! These will be used on the website and printed materials for the shanty (and future opportunities) this summer. Stay tuned for the edited versions in a few weeks! I have a set edited already which you may see a preview of on instagram, but I am not quite sold on it.

Disasters!

Holy smokes!

The past month and a half has been nothing but disasters with ordering things for my selling opportunity and residency in Italy.

It started with the custom printed boxes that I ordered for the larger items. The website had a technical issue and I had to update the design. I thought the change went through but when it finally did, it ended up showing an old design. I emailed customer service right away and provided them with the correct update. All was well.

A week later I receive my boxes, everything was great. The color pay off was passable even though it was a bit lighter than expected, BUT the back of the box the phrase was cut off. They refunded me half of the cost.

Then, I go and order my postcards for the selling op. Everything goes fine until I notice a typo (my fault) but had no idea that the company had a hold option. This was on a Sunday night, so they weren’t in office. I emailed them the correct version and thought it was taken care of, but it had gone to print before it could be corrected. However, the customer service person responded 3 days later saying they had reprinted in courtesy despite the customer service person I spoke to through their website said otherwise! Phew. I had ordered more than wanted, but I feel like they’ll sell, so it should be okay.

Next I order the bags for the shanty. They come and it is a deeper color teal than originally pictured. I knew that color is hard to be accurate on the internet. But it was significantly darker in person. I return the bags no problem.

Next, I order transparent stickers for the print bags. Everything seems to go through OK. But with everything that’s happened so far I panic since it was hard for me to see the transparency went through on the preview on their website. Customer service said it was OK.

After, I order the chemicals for the residency from a place in Europe (to save on shipping). The payment went through but the connection broke and I didn’t get a confirmation order (crap). So I emailed the company right away and they took care of my order the following day.

NOW, I unroll a print I ordered from fedex copy and print a few weeks ago to prepare for an exhibition in NH. I inspect the print and noticed it was streaky (not pixelated)… as well as the width being an inch off. Called fedex and they gave me attitude about my complaints. I sent the file in at 18×25.5 and it printed 17×24. I wanted 18×24. Yeah, I get constraining proportions will get you the 17×24. But you don’t give a customer 17×24 if they ordered 18×24. 17×24 is a TOTALLY different size. Now it won’t fit my frame, and it’s streaky so I can’t exhibit it. They will reprint it. Normally if a file is a bit longer, they print longer. You don’t change the size completely – you stretch it to fill the gap. 17×24 is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT SIZE!!! As a photo this is a big deal!

I’m nervous about traveling after all I went through with ordering things.

Planning, Planning, Planning!

While being snowed in I’ve had the luxury of more time to be doing some planning for my future projects that are starting to come together (which is why I haven’t been updating the blog). I also things haven’t been that eventful for me to actually want to blog about. The two major ones are the Artist Shanty selling opportunity in Hyannis this summer as well as my 6 week sojourning in Europe this spring! Last August I was accepted to do a month of sojourning in Greve in Chianti Italy to focus on production of my artwork. The area is known for having lush greens during spring and that is exactly what my artwork needs. I am also hoping to work with grape vines from the vineyards in Chianti.

Anyway, it’s been a bit of a headache juggling the start of a retail business as well as planning to go away for 6 weeks as well. On my way over to Italy, I’ll be stopping for a few days before May Day to visit my aunt in London and then my parents want to celebrate their anniversary in Paris the first week of June. So we’ll be going to Paris before heading home! Three countries, six weeks! If my money situation is OK when I enter this experience, I might try to take a weekend trip up to Zurich, Switzerland as that is a place I have always wanted to visit!

I have also decided to stop my hobby of tarot reading for the mean time. Only because ever since my heartbreak, my intuition has been on the fritz and sometimes I’m on par and sometimes I’m not and more recently it’s be not. This block has been freaking me out because it’s the source of my creativity as well as being able to function as a human being. Most people look at the world from the outside in, while I’m quite the opposite. I focus on the inside out! I know this block is caused by the heartbreak because I was CONVINCED that this person was going to ask me out. But they didn’t, so I have stopped believing in myself and believing that I CAN feel into future events. It’s quite depressing to deal with when you’ve had an ability for most of your life and all of the sudden it stops!

Also I had my last post-op appointment the other day for the surgeries I had in my left ear to improve my hearing and the stupid cyst grew back! And luckily they found the problem, the hearing aid I was wearing was a bit too long and the edge of the microphone was sharp and kept poking the irritated area that caused the cyst to grow back. So now, I’m going to have to get it removed again in April before my trip to Italy, but not major operation this time hopefully, he said it could be done in their office.

I have been busy also focusing on my K Glyphics visual marketing firm. Giving it more direction and purpose and making some plans and an effort. If my residency project applications don’t come through this spring I have been thinking about spending an extended amount of time out in California as that seems to be where all the work is! But the issue is most contractors don’t like to work with east coast designers due to the time difference.

My client in Dubai has also decide to hire me as her graphic designer for her wedding website for the middle east market. (no I won’t be going to Dubai with her, but I would like to visit one day). So I’m going to be busy with that relatively soon. Just waiting on a few things to begin this new phase with her. A few other graphic design clients have been put on hold as well, so I’m hoping that over the next few weeks they’ll start to pick up again. I’m quite ready to jump back into work. Ever since the holidays and being laid off my job from Hafta Havit it’s been hard for me to stay productive!

Next week is the reception for the Wheaton College Biennial exhibition: Framing Photography! So photos and write up will be posted then. πŸ™‚

Planning, thoughts, and new phases!

I love my desk at home (see above). It feels more like an office now than the desk I had previously. _MG_3644_460w03However, sometimes I’d just like to be in an office setting, around people, away from home and connected to amenities and networking opportunities.Β  I find it more often stimulating, rather than distracting. I’ve learned this especially with working at Hafta Havit, I work in one cubical area, alone, except to meet with the bosses throughout the day and it is isolating! I had a hard time getting used to it. So I’m looking to try out Oficio – a co-working space on Newbury street. I’m thinking of working one day a month to start and then after Italy, maybe buying a “Some Time” membership.

It might give me a breath of fresh air, new ideas and will get me out of the house a bit more. I’m thinking of doing like the Wednesday that I have off and go in around 12-1pm.

We’ll see! But I do like the idea though.

Believe! in the things you can do

This is more apt for a New Year’s post, but I feel inspired to write it now. I keep a physical journal on my desk with the word “Believe” on it that I have stored away for use for writing down project ideas. My intention is to use it as an idea journal. But this is for projects only, not necessarily for career goals and accomplishments. I’m getting a better sense of my direction as an artist, where my artwork falls and who appreciates it, and what to do with it and as a result finding opportunities that are more apt to my interests as an artist.

I believe in the spoken word rule, meaning if I speak it before I have solid foundation on the opportunity, I more often than not will loose that chance! So I have given up on the Art Contest series that I was doing in the fall and will just keep quiet on the things that I do submit to – these opportunities below I have no submitted to but plan to.

On facebook there is a nice way to save links now and I have been saving things that I want to do as an artist in the future – gives me ideas to keep busy!

Hyannis, Hyarts Shanty Acceptance

I am really excited about this! My artwork was accepted to do a week in an artist shanty in Hyannis during 4th of July! This is the first time I’ve really got to an opportunity to sell my work in a retail setting. I’ve already started to think about the inventory and such. I still have to sign a contract and start paying for it. The week I have is 6/29-7/5 so I’ll end with July 4th.

5 Tricks to Selling Oneself

In the freelance world, selling oneself is crucial to gaining new clients. Sometimes it’s difficult to do this, but the easiest way to do this is to put yourself in your client’s shoes. Giving a detailed description of your experience in your cover letter may not be of best interest especially if your experience is not related to the client in anyway. Instead of giving a detailed description, one should highlight general responsibilities that relate directly to the client. If the client is soliciting resumes for a project that is to design a series of marketing print collateral then you would want to describe briefly your experiences with designing that. You wouldn’t want to send a cover letter describing your experiences in print to an internet based job for example.

There are a few other things to include that a client is looking for.

1) Expertise and skill level
You don’t have to mention the number of years as that should be on your resume itself, but rate what level you are in the skills that you know. In graphic design the three big programs used are, Adobe Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. Mentioning you’re an expert in these programs sets you apart from someone who may or may not have mentioned it at all, or mentions that they are beginning level.

2) Client Feedback
In my cover letters I like to mention something that most of my clients seem to enjoy working with me. In my letters I say that clients enjoy working with me because of quick turnaround and being respectful to their budgets. Many freelancers feel that since they are the only ones working under their name they should charge more; I am often seeing graphic designers charge $20-$40 an hour for their efforts. While this may be practical financially, it isn’t necessarily the best way to attract more. Prospective clients look to experience, and with more experience you can charge more. However, I found that it’s better to have several one-time clients paying you $15 per hour than having one client that will pay you $40 per hour. Why? In the end you’ll end up with the same amount of money made, and that one client may drop the ball and you’ll loose that $40 per hour. While on the other hand, if you have 10 clients at once paying you $15 per hour per project, you make more quickly. Some think that quality is better than quantity, but if you are trying to make a living in this field, sometimes quantity is better than quality.

3) Personality on Paper
One of the things my high school taught me about applying to colleges is you have to put your personality on paper. College admissions get 10s of 1,000s of applications each year and if you don’t express yourself in your application, you wouldn’t be as interesting as someone else may be. The same rule applies to your job application. I put my awards and honors on my resume because I can’t tell you how many times it has gotten me an interview… it’s not every day you get an applicant whose work has been at the Smithsonian! The same thing goes for cover letters, state something unique about your process.. did you start in high school? do you have a specialty? formal training (for me it’s printing)? Stating those quirks of your skill set will really set you apart.

4) End something that exudes confidence!Β
I like to end the cover letter with something that you know you can do well. For me, it is “If you choose to work with me you will not be disappointed.” This is a risky statement because it means that everyone who comes my way, is expecting to not be disappointed by the work I do. While I find this is generally hard to accomplish and many times customer disappointment is due to lack of communication and understanding of the field from the customer. I have had many supporters around me say my work is really good and that is better than most designers at my level of experience – so I feel that I can say “If you choose to work with me you will not be disappointed” because more often than not, the clients that have chosen to work with me take home designs that they are happy with! So, pick something you know you can do really well… if you’re really good at typography you can state something like, “My typographic work will make any project that is tossed my way into a work of art!”

5) Add any essential information
Sometimes potential clients would like to know about your home setup, or pay rate (F.Y.I – adding your pay rate I find helps gain responses, especially if you are priced competitively and fairly), if you have transportation, or what your communication setup may be like. Can you do skype meetings? Phone? Email? In person meetings? Adding this info right off the bat, helps the potential client understand your communication strengths. Don’t be put off by someone requesting an in person meeting – a lot can get done in one meeting than trying to communicate through phone or email.
