Housewarming Gift Basket

DSC_0006Last week I went around to a few different stores and put together a Housewarming Gift Basket for my brother for his birthday present. He’s at the point in his life where he can buy anything he wants to – and does – so when it comes to birthdays or other holidays, its’ difficult to find him a present. So I combined his birthday celebration and his purchase of his condo into a housewarming gift basket. The thought process behind all of this is that if he doesn’t use it right away but thinks of it later, he will have it already. I bought him the following items:

Fabric Folding Cubes (x2)
Outdoor Extension Cable
Plastic Bag Caddy
Sutter Home Merlot Wine
WD40
Paint Roller
Picture Hanging parts
Screws
Pack of Playing Cards
Grow your own Chives
Gardening Tools
Plastic Planter Pot (for the basket)

You can buy anything to suit your needs as the giver. My dad got into it as well and bought some of the items on the list. If you’re in a pinch and can’t think of anything, try combining a life event with a birthday. That always seems to do the trick. And last but not least, it was very well received! My brother loved it! πŸ™‚

Studio Findings #4

Cherry TablesSo I was only able to fit in two tables it turned out because the legs turned out a lot bigger than expected. It was a nightmare trying to get to the place though and I won’t go into details… and the people weren’t very nice about me only able to take two. I know I originally said all, you never know when it comes to furniture and there was just a lot of miscommunication and frustration…but I finally got workspace! At least one table should fit in the darkroom I’ll be using it for.

This concludes my search for furniture for now. I have gotten everything I need and now I have to go get my art supplies.

Shopping Rounds

Since my family has bought their retirement/beach home a few years ago, my mom and I have officially built a shopping routine. There are a few stores that I just -have- to stop by before I leave because the merchandise is almost always different and then there are the few that I go for my spiritual supplies.

First up is the Earth House. This is a hippie, vintage metaphysical store. Its a great pitstop to buy basic supplies for your ritual needs. For example, my mom and I made a pitstop yesterday because my co-worker was looking for Frankincense and Myrah incense. They have tarot cards, candles, scents, gemstones and crystals, and many other cool things! Can be a bit pricey though depending on what you’re looking for. Some of their other gifty things can be a bit pricey, but not so much of the ritual tools.

Next up is Buddha Beads. I 575720_496642970352342_191839206_nabsolutely love this store because their prices are pretty decent! I just picked up a really old address book that I’m going to repurpose into a ritual book or sketch book. It’s a 11×17 and has a marble cover and what I liked about it was that the information can be organized alphabetically by using the letters for the addresses. This place is part metaphysical too. If you need selenite it will be there, or a a hindu statue, or chakra jewelry, incense, buddha heads, rough amethyst slabs, singing bowls, you name it. I like the feel of this store better than Earth House though.487911_496643157018990_343837952_n

The next store that I always find good things at is a thrift store called Local Colour Boutique. My mom and I went in here to look for an orange clutch for my reception gala in Montreal next week but unfortunately ConsignmentScenecame out empty handed. The clothing that is picked out is chic enough and I love how the owner displays the clothing by color (well d’oh!) It’s really eye catching. Haven’t found anything yet at this store, we always seem to go in there looking for something specific and end up not finding, I haven’t actually looking around here! Might try that next time.

Finally, the last thrift store I love is St. Joan of Arc. It run by the catholics of St. Joan of Arc church. The prices here are fantastic and the selection is great. The last time I was here I bought cute purple purse as seen in the picture to below. I have found a few good vintage dresses there too, unfortunately not in my size. There were also a few shoes that I liked.

photoWell there you have it! There are a few other shops we stop at but they aren’t as likeable in my opinion. They tend to be a bit of a hit or miss in terms of pricing and selection – they are Shop For A Song and Hope Chest in Orleans. I had found an awesome painted moon, sun and planet plate at Hope Chest but it was too expensive. Although I did find a sweater there the first or second time I went that I wear a lot. The weekend after Mother’s Day my mom found a candle shade that matched her hydrangea wine glasses that I gave her for Mother’s Day.

AirBNB Fail

This morning I woke up with some frustrating and aggravating news.I had booked this place back in MAY to avoid any problems that may arise. So far so good, until my mother decided to come (which wasn’t the problem). I communicated to my host and first he said that he had an extra room available that my Mother can use. I thought, Okay great! Problem solved.A few days later he comes back and says that apparently he forgot he had a friend staying the days that we needed the extra room and offered his room. As a response, I said because of sleeping habits and health conditions it was best if we took the separate rooms. So this morning I woke up to him saying that his landlord decided that they didn’t like having a bunch of different people coming and going. I tried calling my host right away and he said he was in a “rush”, I made him get my number from me and said he’d call me back. Never did…thank god Airbnb handles the transactions; found another place, thankfully. But, OMG – I freaked out. Never in a million years could I have predicted this happening. The guy had 41 positive reviews and everyone loved the place. I was stunned that this happened. Edit: So my former host did finally respond to me, but didn’t say much other than these landlord issues were recent. Bah.

Several reasons… A) I may move out before my lease is up…. B) The money spent on furniture can go into my rent and art supplies. This pick-up is labeled number 3 because last Friday I went into Burlington to pick up some storage shelving for my studio as well and a few weeks before that my mom and I went into Cambridge awhile ago and got a tall black bookshelf for it.

I’ve been on the lookout since then for a desk – something that was large enough that I wouldn’t need another one… I finally succeeded! I’ll have to have my dad help put it together, but since it was free, that was one hassle I didn’t mind. A lot of the desks that people tend to throw out are the solid wood kind, which is good for longevity, but for my needs something that is more modern like the one I got was fine. On Sunday when I was looking at work when it was slow, I found a listing that had THREE tables of the exact kind that I wanted, but someone beat me to it πŸ™ so sad. I shall prevail! Hehe πŸ™‚

Nails

943261_2131929498092_650472153_n I got tired of having short stubby good-for-nothing nails so I thought with the events that are coming up for this summer I’d try acrylic nails! I’m enjoying them so far – just the not ‘getting used to it’ part. So I’m not sure how long these will stay lol. But its’ nice to feel girly and feminine once and awhile!

Edit: Lol so these were a complete fail. I don’t know if it was the glue, the way I put them on, them being too small, the ugly state of my natural nails or what, but the nails on my right hand completely came off by the end of the night. Kind of embarrassing.

Weekly Tarot #42

Monday I had an interview with Mishra Group and got my car inspected… inspection fail because of my muffler so I have to get that replaced. Tuesday I had a very long day and I got my studio lease signed and a bookshelf for it. I also got my artwork for Montreal shipped off to Canada. Wednesday, it was only me and Renee mostly at work, Alex, came later because two other people where out. Today, my mom and I went shopping for new sneakers and shoes at Kolhs. I got another dress for Montreal since I couldn’t find someone in time to alter the dress I bought off etsy. Tomorrow I’m getting my haircut and probably working on my project for my typography class.
Next week:
eight.swords – stars – 6.pentacles – judgement -nine.cups
worry, concern – hope, wish – success, equality – rebirth, second chance – wish, expectation fulfilled

Emptiness

A soothsayer I work with said I was lonely.

Lonely, doesn’t begin to describe the way I feel. And its’ not a self-loathing kind of lonely. It’s a yearning, desire, emptiness of something that once filled my heart. When you’re heart twists and tears itself apart because the light and love that was once in your life is gone… its a loneliness that the person that is gone can only fill.
